Aalborg, Denmark, a city celebrated for its commitment to environmental sustainability, is set to host together with ICLEI Europe the 10th edition of the European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns (ESCT) from 1-3 October. This landmark event, which is returning to Aalborg for the third time, promises to bring together over 1,000 participants from across Europe, including local and regional governments, international institutions, businesses, and civil society organisations.

In recent years, Aalborg has emerged as a trailblazer in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. A key strategy in the municipality’s approach has been its climate partnerships with both the business community and civil society. These strategic alliances aim to reach a broader audience and foster collective action toward reducing carbon emissions.

The city of Aalborg recognises that addressing climate change requires collaboration across various sectors. By partnering with local businesses and civil society organisations, the municipality has created a powerful network of stakeholders committed to environmental sustainability. These partnerships, far from being symbolic, involve concrete actions and mutual accountability.

Not only small local businesses, but also large corporations, are actively involved in Aalborg’s climate initiatives. These businesses commit to specific measures aimed at reducing their carbon footprint, such as implementing energy-efficient technologies, optimising heating and cooling systems, and adopting renewable energy sources. Many local companies have embraced circular economy practices, minimising waste, promoting recycling, and reusing materials. These principles have become integral to their operations. In transportation, businesses are exploring alternatives to fossil fuel-powered vehicles, such as electric fleets or shared mobility options. The municipality facilitates knowledge sharing, provides incentives, and monitors progress to ensure accountability and drive meaningful change.

Civil society organisations play a crucial role in driving change at the grassroots level. Aalborg’s climate partnerships extend to housing associations, city associations, and community groups. These organisations collaborate to create green spaces within residential areas, such as rooftop gardens, community parks, and urban forests that enhance biodiversity and absorb CO2. Education and awareness initiatives are also central to these partnerships. City associations organise workshops, seminars, and educational programs to empower residents to make informed choices about sustainable living. Additionally, community groups advocate for policies that prioritise climate action, participating in public consultations and raising awareness about environmental issues.

The upcoming Aalborg2024 conference will highlight the city’s successful climate partnerships and explore how these models can be replicated across Europe. The conference will address critical topics such as shared governance, integrated finance, and cohesive transition, featuring a rich program including plenaries, workshops, and mobile sessions. The key objectives of the conference are to share best practices, inspire collaboration, and set ambitious goals for the future of sustainable cities.

“In Aalborg, we do not wait around for solutions, but develop them together. Therefore, it is important that we dare to take the lead and push for more green development throughout Europe. In my view, sharing experiences amongst communities is one of the most important things we can do in order to speed up the green transition, and I am very pleased that we are hosting Aalborg2024. I look forward to both sharing experiences and developing new approaches in order to promote sustainability in European cities,” shares Aalborg Mayor Lasse Frimand Jensen.

Sharing best practices with like-minded professionals is a cornerstone of the conference. Participants will exchange insights on sustainable urban development, climate resilience, and innovative solutions. These discussions will provide valuable knowledge and inspiration for cities and towns across Europe. By showcasing the success of Aalborg’s partnerships, the conference will encourage other cities to adopt similar strategies and work towards collective climate goals.

Setting ambitious goals for the future of sustainable cities is another key objective of the conference. From circular economy strategies to carbon-neutral pathways, the conference will shape the agenda for sustainable urban development in the coming years. Participants will discuss and formulate plans to tackle pressing environmental challenges and transition to more sustainable practices. Aalborg’s role as a host city and a model of successful climate partnerships underscores the importance of collective action in addressing climate change.

What unites all climate partners — businesses and civil society alike — is their unwavering commitment to action. The city of Aalborg provides a platform for these diverse stakeholders to collaborate, share best practices, and inspire each other. As the effects of climate change become increasingly urgent, these partnerships serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating that collective efforts can drive meaningful change.

The 10th edition of the ESCT is not just a conference but a celebration of the power of collective action. This event will bring together a diverse group of participants who are all committed to building a more sustainable and resilient future. It will provide a unique opportunity to learn from Aalborg’s experience, share insights, and forge new partnerships. By coming together, participants can amplify their impact and work towards common goals.

The conference will feature a range of sessions designed to facilitate learning, collaboration, and inspiration. Plenaries will provide a platform for high-level discussions on key topics, while deep dives and workshops will offer a more in-depth exploration of a specific issue. Mobile sessions will allow participants to experience first-hand some of Aalborg’s successful sustainable initiatives. These sessions will provide valuable opportunities to see how theory is put into practice and to learn from real-world examples.

In addition to the formal sessions, the conference will provide ample opportunities for networking and informal discussions. Participants will have the chance to connect with peers, share experiences, and build relationships that can lead to future collaborations. The atmosphere of the conference will be one of mutual support and shared purpose, with a focus on finding practical solutions to the challenges of sustainable urban development.

The 10th edition of the ESCT promises to be a significant event in the calendar of sustainable urban development. It will showcase Aalborg’s leadership in climate partnerships and provide a platform for cities and towns across Europe to come together and work towards a more sustainable future. The conference will be a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of collaboration in addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.
