The upscale InterContinental Berlin hotel sits next to leafy Tiergarten Park, a pleasant walk from the iconic Brandenburg Gate. It’s one of the few hotels leased by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and offers elegant rooms or spacious suites, a huge indoor pool area and the relaxing SPA InterContinental. There’s easy and green access by train and bus, direct bus links from both Schönefeld airport and nearby Tegel airport, and stops on the doorstep, while the train station Zooologischer Garten is just 8 minutes away.

Guests will enjoy the nearby Tiergarten Park to escape the bustle of the city. This ’green lung of Berlin’ is an oasis and at 210 hectares, is even larger than Hyde Park in London. Berlin is also a great place to experience history and different cultures just by traveling through the varied districts such as Mitte, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg.

Since 1978, the InterContinental Berlin has established itself as one of the best known hotels in the city and benefits from the experience and history of over 40 years of hospitality. The hotel welcomes heads of state, government representatives and celebrities due to its high security standards, responsible business practices and sustainable management. As the largest IHG hotel in Europe, it’s an ideal location for political summits, conferences and green meetings, offering an impressive total meeting area of 64584 ft².

To underline this importance, Union Investment and IHG are investing EUR 60 million in a modernisation programme. The upgrade will include the 558 luxurious guest rooms, beautifully designed public areas of the hotel and the ballroom. The hotel will remain open during the works, which will be managed to ensure a continued high level of hospitality and uninterrupted guest services. The renovation started with the complete refurbishment of the large ballroom (16361 ft²). Towards the end of the year, guest rooms in the south and east wings of the hotel will get a renovation. Work on the west wing will follow once these areas are completed. The lobby and reception space will also be refurbished while retaining their high-quality standards.

September is special for the InterContinental Berlin, as it’s our ‘Giving for Good’ month. In September last year, colleagues were invited to make a positive contribution through volunteering, doing their bit for the environment, or doing something extra to take care of their health and wellbeing as part of the ‘True Hospitality For Good’ initiative. For each colleague that took part, IHG contributed funds to one of 11 charity partners of the colleague’s choosing, donating a total of US $400,000 over the course of the month. IHG’s list of charity partners was specially curated to support causes that tie closely to our business, including building skills and education in the hospitality industry and providing aid when disasters strike.

But the hotel does not stop there. Over the whole year, they take care of their neighbours and community. Employees regularly hand out food at the Berliner Stadtmission, gather items for a public flea market and donate the earnings, cook food for the Ronald McDonald House, Kleidung für Menschen, and donate regularly to the Berliner Obdchlosenhilfe, also ensuring, in cooperation with USE (Union Social Facility) that the outside surroundings are kept clean and well maintained.

First opened in 1958, InterContinental Berlin is one of the most established and internationally renowned hotels in the German capital and has been upgraded several times during its history. Given Union Investment’s extension of 30 years to IHG’s lease, there is no question that one of Germany’s top revenue-generating hotels will remain a long-term fixture close to the famous Berlin Zoo. These measures will secure the presence of IHG in Berlin for decades to come, ensuring that this important icon in Berlin remains the favourite choice for guests looking for a luxurious and distinguished hotel experience.
