One of the primary objectives of the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium is to promote environmentally friendly behaviour which helps minimise the impact on the environment and reduces carbon footprint.
Thanks to Kursaal’s commitment to environmental stewardship, in January 2008, the Congress Centre was awarded the coveted UNE EN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Certification. This award recognises Kursaal’s Environmental Management System as one which minimises any of the Congress Centre’s operations which may negatively affect the environment. This is carried out by not only reducing energy, raw material, water consumption and optimising waste management, but also by committing the Congress Centre to continually improve in these endeavours as part of its Environmental Improvement Plan.
Kursaal’s Environmental Management System has resulted in, among other quantifiable benefits for the organisation and the broader community, considerable savings in raw materials and energy and a significant reduction of waste. In particular, water usage has been cut by 70%, electricity by 34% and paper by 41%.
The ISO 14001 standard provides a steadfast assurance that the Kursaal Congress Centre’s environmental impact is always being measured and improved, while strict internal protocols which help to optimise the management of resources are followed. In addition to promoting innovative thinking and transformative change, this commitment to the environment also guarantees cost reduction and business continuity.
Kursaal’s specialist Department of Sustainability is entrusted with the responsibility of the management of this Environmental Improvement Plan, with the Department’s Technical Director overseeing operations to ensure compliance and efficiency.

Green Mark at the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR)
In 2015, the Kursaal Congress Centre was awarded the prestigious AENOR Green Mark for Environmental Management at the International Tourism Trade Fair, which takes places annually in Madrid. AENOR offers the most extensive catalogue of environmental certificates, validations and verifications, that allows an organisation to prove its commitment to the environment and promote the best management of resources. The assessments conducted by AENOR help to make environmental commitment a factor of competitive differentiation.
AENOR's support for good practices in environmental matters ranges from general environmental management systems, such as ISO 14001, to areas such as ecodesign or energy management or issues concerning specific sectors, such as forestry.
