With 285,000 residents, Ljubljana is a compact walking city boasting an atmosphere that is both Central European and Mediterranean; historic, yet lively. Well-renowned for its picturesque architectural heritage and eclectic nature of its culture, both powerful testimonials of its rich past, Ljubljana is also a destination where tourism and urban development have been carefully planned and well thought-out over the years.
Thanks to its exceptional environmental awareness, the Slovenian capital has managed to not only preserve but intensify its green character. The process of transforming Ljubljana into a role-model for sustainable development was recognised when it won the prestigious title of European Green Capital 2016, awarded to the city by the European Commission for having achieved the largest number of sustainable changes in the shortest period of time. The title has made a strong impact on strengthening the city brand internationally and this has been maximised by the tourism industry.
Implementing changes that benefit local residents and visitors alike requires a mixture of expertise, vision and passion. Those who have returned to Ljubljana after a few years are struck by the visible transformation, which has improved the quality of life there without harming the city's authenticity, making it even more attractive to tourists. The award has also left a strong legacy among many local residents, who have actively embraced green actions as a way of everyday life, making the award an ongoing project.

Sustainability as part of the local DNA
Ljubljana has always been a city with a green soul. Many visitors describe it as a green, safe, friendly, multilingual and clean city, where genuine hospitality and attention to detail are amongst the biggest professional values. In the last decade, Ljubljana has implemented a number of green initiatives and sustainable development measures, including green mobility, waste management and sustainable urban planning. Which changes are we talking about?
In 2012, the inner part of the city centre was closed to motorised vehicles, which has persuaded the residents of Ljubljana to increasingly opt for cycling as a means of transport. The popularity of urban cycling is growing rapidly and the city's cyclists thoroughly enjoy using the free BicikeLJ bike sharing network. The BicikeLJ system of bicycle sharing allows everyone to hire bikes from self-service terminals located across the wider Ljubljana city centre. The Slovenian capital knows it’s on the right path as regards cycling opportunities, as the Copenhagenize Index regularly ranks Ljubljana among the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world.

An electric-powered vehicle named Kavalir (Gentle Helper) has also been introduced. This is a free city centre transport option, friendly to both people and the environment. Kavalirs, mainly intended for the transport of the elderly, mobility-impaired people and visitors, run around the pedestrianized historical city centre at a speed slow enough to be hailed anywhere on the street. Additionally, Ljubljana has increased the number of city buses running on methane, which has visibly reduced CO2 emissions.
And this is not all - the city also prides itself on having an astounding per capita green space provision of 542 square metres, some of which is right in the heart of the historic city centre. The residents of Ljubljana are also lucky to live next to a river and drink excellent potable water of a quality equal to that of water from subterranean sources, which is not processed with any technological procedure. During the warmer months, both locals and visitors are very glad of the city’s 30+ drinking fountains that provide free refreshment. They are easily accessible and simple to find via the Tap water Ljubljana app.
The Ljubljana Marshes, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, are a unique landscape at Ljubljana’s doorstep. It is a natural area of swamps and peat bogs known for rare animal and plant species. Covering around 160 square kilometres, it is home to 161 bird species, 86 of them endangered.
Ljubljana is also proud to be the first EU capital to have announced a zero waste plan and has received several international awards for its mobility strategy and the accessibility of its public spaces to mobility-impaired people.

Prestigious accolades matter (but are not everything)
All these efforts haven't passed unnoticed. In the past few years, Ljubljana has become a recipient of prestigious high-profile international awards and recognitions (beside the title of European Green Capital 2016), which are a valuable, yet not most important, indicator of the destination's overall performance. From this long and quite impressive list, we are particularly proud of:
The course of tourism development in Ljubljana has clearly shown that our big achievements in haven’t been overnight successes - Ljubljana’s sustainable development is an ongoing project with a long-term aim of addressing the needs of 21st-century urban life while taking into account the wellbeing of both residents and the local environment. Above all, they are clear proof that sustainability is a deeply-rooted value that the locals have actively embraced, and that is something we take great pride in, as it transcends the significance of even the most distinguished international recognitions.

Ljubljana is an established conference city, too…
Besides a strong commitment to sustainable practices in the city’s urban development, the ongoing efforts of local stakeholders have also been paying off in the meetings and events industry.
Ljubljana’s many qualities, particularly its vibrant city feel and the short walking distances between tourist attractions, special venues, accommodations and conference facilities, are constantly emphasized among the features that impress business travellers most. The city is often depicted by conference delegates as an easily navigable and logistically simple destination and a very welcoming place.
Ljubljana offers the largest number of conference facilities in Slovenia, with high-quality conference halls, a number of academic and historic special venues, and two congress centres; the CD Congress Centre (2000 delegate capacity) and GR - Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, with capacity for 3300 delegates. It’s the country's leading conference destination in terms of the number of international conferences hosted so far. The latest ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) statistics report from 2017 ranks Ljubljana as Europe's 28th and the world's 56th most popular destination for international association meetings.
A recent Congress delegates' survey carried out by Ljubljana Tourism demonstrates that business travellers, and especially congress delegates, are highly desirable visitors to Ljubljana, generating many positive effects on the destination, besides a higher expenditure and longer-than-average stays.
... with green meetings in its focus
In the last few years, much of the investment into the renovation of congress venues and hotels has been directed at increasing their sustainable management, focusing mainly on energy efficiency and use of natural materials as well as sourcing local produce.
A good example of a Ljubljana event that has continuously demonstrated its green mentality is the Conventa show. Ljubljana Tourism has been the strategic partner of the show since its very beginnings in 2007. The Conventa is a B2B event held annually in January, where meetings industry service providers from the New Europe meet and present themselves to selected buyers from Europe and beyond. It is well known for hospitality, a dynamic social programme, a boutique quality and clients of high standard. Additionally, it has set a very good example as regards the organization of ‘green meetings’, with green initiatives including recycled materials used in different ways and locally produced food served throughout the event. This has contributed to Conventa becoming a highly successful business event with a great reputation in the region.

What does the future hold?
The ongoing expansion and improvement of the city's tourist offer in a broader sense is also important to enhancing Ljubljana's destination appeal. In the next few years, the city will see an intensified development of its overall tourist and congress offer, particularly in the hotel sector. Additionally, a brand new Arrivals passenger terminal at the Ljubljana Airport is to be completed by spring 2021.
Ljubljana's growing visibility in the international meeting industry market can be attributed to several factors, including continuous marketing efforts by the key local stakeholders active in international associations, as well as in the corporate events segment.
Several new hotel openings are planned in the next four years that will bring a range of modern venues for various types of event. Across the street from the InterContinental Ljubljana, a new 5-star hotel is expected to open in spring 2021. Four new 4-star properties are also being built: two of them within the city centre. In spring 2019, after a full renovation, the Central Hotel will have been transformed from a primarily 4-star business property with a privileged downtown location into a lifestyle hotel with modern urban vibes. The Union Hotels group is currently also investing in the partial refurbishment of the Lev Hotel.
A few smaller boutique hotel projects in the city centre have been announced, too. Last, but not least, two existing hotels, Four Points by Sheraton Mons Ljubljana and the Best Western Premier Hotel Slon, have presented their development plans, which will bring a total of 220 new rooms on the market. From the current capacity of approximately 2,800 rooms, their estimated number should reach 4,000 by 2024.
Last but not least, 2021 will also see the opening of the completely renovated Sugar Factory (“Cukrarna”) Gallery project, located about 10-min walk from the old town. The new multifunctional event/cultural space with a very rich history - having once been the largest sugar processing plant in the Habsburg Lands - will accommodate approximately 1000 guests.

Ljubljana is a city that works successfully as both a lively capital for people committed to sustainable urban and tourism development, and a city carefully preserving its rich cultural and historical legacy. Its location, in the centre of Slovenia and close to many of its major tourist attractions, makes it a perfect base for discovering the many faces and diverse experiences of the country. This includes enticing gastronomy and wine culture, which is based on regional cuisine and fresh local ingredients. Slovenia is strongly raising its profile in this regard and it is named European Region of Gastronomy 2021 by The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT).
Looking to the future, Ljubljana is committed to continued improvement in its tourism industry, which will allow the city to pursue development along a sustainable and smart city path. With the new investments in the hotel sector, the creation of new product development strategies such as cultural and sports tourism, the creation of new boutique local experiences, the management of tourism flows, the development of the Central Slovenia region's tourism offer and our aim to establish Ljubljana as a prominent European MICE destination, we are confident that the future for and in Ljubljana is looking bright, especially if we continue to work side by side with key local stakeholders in a strong team spirit.
