While sitting in a waterfront cafe on the beautiful Croatian coast, catching up on the daily news and sipping on the finest local artisan coffee, one can be forgiven for not being preoccupied about the environmental impact of their hard-earned vacation. But nevertheless, the environmental impact is always going to be there.

 

That's why at Croatia Airlines we've decided to put together some valuable information about sustainable air travel.

 

So how can a tourist become more environmentally conscious? I THINK.

 

It all starts at home, where you should only pack the necessary items for your trip and try not to carry too much weight. Streamline your excess baggage just like Croatia Airlines have done with the modernisation of all cabin seats which provide even more room for less weight and fuel consumption.

 

Transport is the most energy-intensive part of any travel experience. Make sure that you choose your itinerary based not only on its cost-effectiveness but also by its overall energy efficiency merits. Choose air travel for longer distances, trains for medium distances and for local journeys always go for public transportation and/or cycling. To put that into context, let’s take a look at the bigger picture of the environmental impact of one journey. Typically speaking, a trip from the Croatian capital Zagreb to the coastal city of Split (387 kilometres) in a petrol car will end up producing around 46 kilos of CO2 for the entire journey, assuming that the Driver is the sole passenger. When you are in a pleasant company of other passengers on Croatia Airlines flight, flying 800 km/h in a full A320 you produce about 33 kilos of CO2 and in Dash8 Q400 about 30 kilos of CO2 per passenger, including lots of baggage. That's quite a lot of CO2 you can be saving!

 

Hotels and apartments in Croatia mostly come fully equipped with air-conditioning units. Use them rationally as the company responsibly uses its own Auxiliary Power Units for air conditioning purposes.

 

Incorporate recycling into your daily routine. During your stay, please make sure to follow local regulations on Waste management in Croatia. Blue containers are for Paper, Yellow for Plastic, Green for Glass and Black for Communal Waste. Local requirements are strictly adhered to on all Croatia Airlines destinations, and further initiatives are implemented to help reduce the amount of cabin waste. Plastic is considered to be one of the most major environmental and public health problems and will be tackled even more following EU and industry initiatives. Croatia Airlines is always committed to being at the forefront of action against plastic pollution in the airline industry.

 

Noise pollution is something that Croatia Airlines also addresses vehemently. All Dash8 Q400 aircraft come fully equipped with ANVS (Active Noise and Vibration Suppression system) for noise reduction, while vortex generators will be installed on the Airbus fleet during the Winter of 2018/19 (further reducing the sound levels by about 9dB) - despite the fact that both aircraft are already ICAO Chapter IV compliant regarding noise standards. Silence is golden when it comes to enjoying your holidays!

 

Keep calm and carry on. This is your vacation time, after all, which is why Croatia Airlines will "offset” your Air Travel CO2 for you through the EU ETS system (as they have been doing since 2010) and will continue to do it globally through the CORSIA mitigation approach starting from 2019.

 

So there you have it. Travel safe in the knowledge that Croatia Airlines have been rigorously implementing international standards of environmental and energy management for many years. This means the company is always monitoring its environmental impact and implementing continuous improvements.
