On the 24th November 2016,  Climate Russia and the Russian Carbon Fund organised their third international conference, “Sustainable Universities for a Clean Future”, at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University).

The event attracted more than 250 students and heads from some of the leading higher education institutions of the Eurasian Economic Union. The main focus of the forum was the role that universities could play in the development of the green economy within the EAEU.

The Russian, Belarusian and Kazakh higher education institutions also signed a memorandum of understanding to create a new EAEU Green Universities Association. The goal of this new union: to develop a platform for universities, think tanks and business/educational collaborative programmes and projects. Membership of the Association will provide universities with the opportunity to improve quality standards, enhance educational outcomes and performance, share best practices, whilst students and scholars would get the opportunity to realise and commercialise their ideas not only at alma mater, but also with other universities from all over the EAEU.

The MGIMO conference also hosted the final of the 2016 Best Young Ecological Projects award, Climatron. Student teams proposed real-world solutions to issues of sustainable development business, presented to them by the award’s main partnering organisations; Unilever, UPM and UNDP Russia. 24 teams from 12 universities from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan participated in Climatron 2016. The winners got the chance to win prizes and undertake an internship placement at one of the partnering companies.

2017 is expected to bring far more participants and guests from all over Eurasia to the “Sustainable Universities for a Clean Future” conference. The fourth forum will also mark the official inaugration of the EAEU Green Universities Association. Each and every higher education institution based in the Eurasian Economic Union will be eligible to join the Association.
